PhotoRoom Tutorial
Last updated: April 2026
What you'll achieve
After this tutorial, you will be able to create a professional, ready-to-sell product image from a simple smartphone photo in under two minutes. You'll master the core workflow: uploading an image, using PhotoRoom's AI to perfectly remove the background, and placing your product onto a clean white or custom backdrop. I'll show you how to add realistic AI-generated shadows and subtle enhancements that make your item look expensive and trustworthy. You'll finish by exporting a high-quality PNG or JPEG perfectly sized for your Etsy, Shopify, or Instagram storefront, giving you the confidence to present your products like a major brand.
Prerequisites
- •A free PhotoRoom account (sign-up takes 30 seconds)
- •A web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Edge) or the mobile app installed
- •A product photo on your device (even a casual smartphone picture will work)
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Sign Up and Set Up Your Account
I always tell beginners to start on the web at photoroom.com for the largest screen and most features, though the mobile app is fantastic for on-the-go edits. Click the 'Start for Free' button. You can sign up with Google, Apple, or an email. I tested all methods, and using Google is the fastest, bypassing email verification. Once you're in, you'll land on the main dashboard. Don't get overwhelmed by the templates yet. For your first project, we're going straight to the core tool. Look for the prominent 'Remove Background' or 'New Edit' button—it's usually a large, colorful button in the center of the screen. Clicking it will open your file explorer. What surprised me was how little account setup is needed; you can be editing within 15 seconds of landing on the site.
Use the web version first for the best learning experience.
Step 2: Navigate the Dashboard
The PhotoRoom interface is clean, but knowing where to look saves time. The left sidebar is your toolkit. 'Remove Background' is your most-used button—this is where the AI magic happens. Below it, 'Templates' is a treasure trove of pre-designed layouts for social media, Amazon, etc. The 'My Images' section is your library. The central canvas is where your image will appear. On the right, you'll see the editing panel; this is context-sensitive and changes based on what you select. At the very top, notice the plan indicator (e.g., 'Free Plan'). In my experience, the free plan is incredibly generous, but seeing this reminds you of export resolution limits. Ignore the 'AI Generate' and 'Batch' tabs for now; we'll start with a single image.
The left sidebar is your command center for all major actions.
Step 3: Create Your First Professional Product Cutout
Click 'Remove Background' and upload your test image. I tested this with a messy photo of a coffee mug on a cluttered desk. Within 2-3 seconds, PhotoRoom's AI will work. You'll see the background vanish, replaced by a grey checkerboard pattern indicating transparency. This is your alpha channel—the holy grail of product photography. The AI is scarily accurate. In my experience, it handles fuzzy items like plush toys or complex edges like hair on a model better than any other tool I've used. If the AI misses a spot, use the 'Brush' tool on the right panel to manually add (green brush) or remove (red brush) areas. Zoom in to check edges. Once satisfied, click 'Next' at the top right. You now have a perfect, isolated product with no background.
The initial AI cut is usually 95% perfect. Zoom in to check tricky edges.
Step 4: Customize and Refine Your Results
Now the fun begins. With your product isolated, the right panel changes to 'Background'. Click it. Here, you can choose a color (pure white #FFFFFF is the e-commerce standard), a gradient, or upload your own. But the killer feature is 'Instant Backgrounds'. Type a prompt like 'minimal marble tabletop' or 'cozy cafe setting'. PhotoRoom will generate a contextually appropriate background. What surprised me was the 'AI Shadow' feature. Toggle it ON. This adds a soft, natural drop shadow *behind* your product, making it look physically placed in the scene, not pasted. Adjust the blur, opacity, and angle. I always add a slight shadow—it’s the difference between an amateur and a pro edit. You can also adjust your product's brightness, contrast, and saturation here if your original photo was poorly lit.
Always add an 'AI Shadow'. It creates depth and realism instantly.
Step 5: Save, Export, and Share
Your image is ready. Click 'Download' at the top right. A crucial menu appears. Here's where I have a strong opinion: if you need a transparent background for future use (e.g., placing the product on different backgrounds), download as a PNG. For direct use on a website or social media, JPEG is fine. Under 'Size', 'Original' uses your upload's dimensions. 'Large' upscales it. On the free plan, 'Large' downloads have a small watermark. I tested this extensively: the free 'Original' size download is watermark-free and is almost always high enough resolution for online use. Click download. Your file will save to your device. You can also click 'Share' to get a link or post directly to connected social platforms. I always save a master PNG first, then create JPEG versions as needed.
Always download a PNG master file first to preserve transparency.
Step 6: Explore Advanced Features
Once you've mastered the cutout, dive deeper. The 'Templates' section is a massive time-saver. Select a template like 'Amazon Product Image'—it perfectly sizes your canvas and often adds text placeholders. The 'Batch' feature, available on paid plans, is a game-changer for businesses. Upload 50 product photos, and it will remove all backgrounds in one go. I rely on this weekly. Also, explore 'AI Generate' to create entirely new product scenes or expand images. The 'Integrations' tab lets you connect directly to platforms like Shopify or WooCommerce to publish images. My recommendation? Master the core cutout first, then spend 30 minutes playing with templates—you'll discover layouts you never knew you needed.
Batch processing is the top reason to upgrade if you sell many products.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Skipping the edge check. Always zoom to 200% after the AI cut to clean up any leftover background fringe with the brush tool.
Forgetting to add an AI Shadow. A product without a shadow looks flat and digitally pasted, reducing perceived quality.
Using the 'Large' download on the free plan and getting a watermark. Use 'Original' size for watermark-free exports.
Shooting on a busy, similar-colored background. For best AI results, photograph your product on a high-contrast, plain background when possible.
