Key Features
- ✓Text-to-Song Generation
I type a prompt like 'synthwave ballad about a lost robot' and get a full, structured song with vocals and instrumentals in under a minute.
- ✓Lyric Generation
The AI writes surprisingly coherent, genre-appropriate lyrics based on my prompt. I can edit them directly in the interface before generation.
- ✓Extend Tool
My favorite feature. I can select a 30-second clip and have Udio generate a full intro, verse, chorus, or outro to seamlessly continue the song.
- ✓Remix Tool
I upload an audio snippet (mine or AI-generated), and Udio creates a new song in a different style while preserving the vocal melody.
- ✓Custom Style Prompts
Beyond genres, I can specify 'in the style of 80s movie montage' or 'Gregorian chant mixed with dubstep' for wildly unique results.
- ✓Vocal Control
I can specify gender, vocal style (e.g., 'raspy,' 'ethereal'), and even approximate age for the AI singer in my prompt.
- ✓Instrumentation Hints
Adding phrases like 'driving bassline,' 'acoustic guitar fingerpicking,' or 'orchestral swell' to the prompt gives me more precise instrumental control.
- ✓Song Structure Control
Using the Extend tool, I can manually build a song section-by-section (intro, verse, chorus, bridge), giving me compositional agency.
- ✓Community Feed
I browse a feed of songs from other users, which is incredible for inspiration and for seeing what prompts work well.
- ✓Prompt-Based Editing
After generating a clip, I can use a new text prompt to re-generate only a portion of it, like changing the drums or harmonies.
- ✓Royalty-Free Output
All songs I generate are mine to use commercially in videos, podcasts, and games without worrying about copyright strikes.
- ✓Rapid Iteration
With each generation costing a few credits, I can create dozens of song variations in an hour to find the perfect one.
Tips & Tricks
Start your prompt with the genre, then the theme, then specific instruments. Example: 'Indie folk, song about seasonal depression, prominent banjo and cello.'
Use the Extend tool on the *best* 10-second segment of your initial generation to build a stronger full song around that highlight.
For more consistent vocals, generate a clip with a good vocal line, then use the Remix tool on that clip to create variations.
Browse the Community Feed and click 'Create Similar' on songs you like to reverse-engineer effective prompting strategies.
If a generation is close but not perfect, use the prompt-based edit feature to tweak just one element instead of starting over.
Limitations
- -You cannot upload a vocal stem and have the AI generate backing tracks around it; it must start from text or an Udio-generated clip.
- -While good, you have limited fine-grained control over song structure (BPM, key changes) compared to a traditional DAW.
- -The AI can sometimes produce lyrical clichés or repetitive melodic phrases, especially with simpler prompts.
- -Output is currently limited to 1 minute 30 seconds per generation, requiring the Extend tool for longer tracks.
