Key Features

Tips & Tricks

TIP

Always correct major transcription errors before editing. The AI aligns your edits to the audio based on the text, so accuracy is key for clean cuts.

TIP

Use the 'Find' tool (Cmd/Ctrl+F) in the transcript to instantly jump to and edit specific spoken phrases or topics across a long recording.

TIP

For the cleanest Overdub results, record your voice sample in a dead-silent room with the same microphone you typically use for content.

TIP

Apply Studio Sound *before* using filler word removal. The AI needs a clean audio signal to accurately identify the 'ums' and 'ahs'.

TIP

Export individual clips for social media directly by highlighting text in the transcript and using the 'Export Selection' option in the Share menu.

Common Commands

Cmd/Ctrl + K

Splits a clip or transcript at the playhead position. My most-used shortcut for making quick cuts.

Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + D

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Descript good for editing music or sound effects?+
In my experience, no. It's built for spoken word. The timeline is sample-accurate for cuts, but it lacks proper audio ducking, detailed EQ, or a sound effect library. Use it for dialogue, then finish audio in Audacity or Descript.
How accurate is the transcription, and does it work with accents?+
For clear North American or British English, I find it 95-98% accurate. It struggles more with strong regional accents or poor audio quality. Always budget time for light proofreading, especially on the free plan's transcription.
Can I use Descript as my only editing software?+
For podcasters and creators making interview-based or solo talking-head content, absolutely yes. For YouTubers needing heavy b-roll, complex graphics, or music synchronization, you'll likely need a secondary traditional editor for final polish.
Is Overdub ethical to use?+
This is crucial. I only use my custom Overdub to correct my own flubs in my own content. You must have explicit, written consent to clone someone else's voice. Descript's terms require it, and it's just the right thing to do to avoid deepfake issues.
What's the biggest learning curve?+
Unlearning traditional timeline editing. The first time you delete a word in the transcript and hear the audio seamlessly cut, it feels wrong. Trust the process. Once you embrace editing text, you'll never want to go back to staring at waveforms for simple edits.
